mental mise en place

Mise en Place is a French term meaning “to put in place.” It is a culinary principle that cooks use to organize ingredients and tools so that they are efficient and at an absolute level of readiness. It really is a concept that can be used in any aspect of your life. Mental Mise en Place is simply having your head in the game.

Pace Yourself

  • This is not a race

  • Rest when you need it

  • Set a realistic goal

Be Ready to Turn Back

At some point you may become lost.

You may lose the trail and think you can find it if you continue on.

Perhaps you’ve picked up a connecting trail and didn’t realize it.

Maybe you think if you go off the trail it will be shorter than turning around

More often than not, it’s best to just turn around and go back the way you came, even if you’ve come a VERY long way.

Be Aware of Your Surroundings

  • Watch your feet- be careful of tripping, slipping and any wildlife along the trail

  • Keep an eye out for wildlife- Try and stay out of their way

  • Don’t wear headphones-this is of course better than playing your music on a speaker, but you need to be able to hear things that you may not be able to see

  • Be aware of other people-I have never once felt unsafe while hiking in Lancaster County, but you should always be aware of who might be around you
